About this limited edition photograph:

The light painted photograph “Spanning the Abyss” was created on the Lover’s Lane Bridge on the Phelps Park Trail in Decorah, Iowa.

This was a very challenging photograph to produce, and one of my longest camera exposures to date.

To create this light painted photograph I placed my Canon T3i camera on a tripod and I used a long exposure of 1863 seconds. I used a red colored gel filter over the front of my mini flashlight and I cast light onto each vertical handrail board by hand. I then used an aqua colored gel filter to shine light onto the tops of the stone railings. Finally, I used a magenta colored gel filter to shine light onto the faces of the stone walls and pillars. Because of their proximity to the cliff edge, this had me hanging precariously over the edge of the cliff in order to illuminate the stone and not block the light with my body- all the while in the dark. Ultimately I went home safe and sound.

This photograph came off my camera as-is, and involved zero post-processing or Photoshop.
